actually i like Sarah Palin very much. she is a very good role model for all women. i believe that she is a great politician and did something very well in Alaska.

Well, jumping in late here, but I just got to watch last night’s speech and am very happy with her!

I am very much an advocate of SAHMs, but each family is unique, as is each mother. More power to her if she is able to do it all! We need such a warm, witty, intelligent representative to fight for the sanctity of life and family in this country.

I got an email from a liberal aunt who was forwarding the “talking points” against Sarah. Their biggest complaint? She is a hunting and snow mobile riding redneck! That is what they have on her!

Go Sarah!

Of course, juggling having children and being a mother and being VP is going to take skill and be a challenge. No one can replace "mom" -- not even dad. But I am certain Gov. Palin and her family have certainly discussed the sacrifices they will call be called to make. Rebecca brought up a great point, "In too many of life's arenas, especially the professional world. . . mothers with babies are most unwelcome. Oh, it's OK to be a mother, as long as you usually keep your baby hidden away. . . Governor Palin is exposing the lie to all that. She is completely, unashamedly, unapologetically, a mother."

I read that she was baptized Catholic, but that her parents began attending a different church when she was still young. Now she calls herself a “non-denominational Christian”.

And yes, it’s not like she will have to juggle laundry, cooking, and cleaning if she and McCain are elected.

Besides, other VPs and Presidents have successfully parented while holding office. In fact, our current President is a parent. So was the President before him. (Remember the flap about Chelsea’s school because the Clintons didn’t send her to DC public schools?)

It seems silly to me that the media are bringing this up. They wouldn’t bother if she were male.

The point Laura made about the children being older is excellent, and that her dh has aleady severed his employment with BP to be at home more. Also, it’s not like she’s going to have to sqeeze in the VP job between trips to Costco or while the wash is running. It’s a rather myopic view of the role a woman can assume. I think this will be one of the most interesting elections in a long time!

I keep hearing the comment “parenting five children while in the White House.” I think it is important to remember, that one of these children is already in the Army, so out of the house, and another child is 17, so practically an adult, too. I do agree it may be hard to parent a 1 year old w/special needs in that situation- but that is me – she may not have any issues at all. And it seems like the naysayers are forgetting that these children have *two* parents. I am thinking, if one spouse is Vice President, the other spouse may be able to be the full-time parent in that situation.

I am finally excited about the idea of voting this year.

Firstly, a big thank you Stef for the opportunity to talk about this news! Well, I’m just SO EXCITED for you all, if only we had such a vp (our vice prime minister is a woman but strongly pro-choice, single lady)….I think have family and her views about her family is such an EXAMPLE to everyone, a women with what would be classified as a big family and so beautifully accepting of her latest blessing in a world that wants to erase such a child from the world – this is going to be such an interesting and energized election!

I was very enthused about this election the more I read about her and the more I heard her speak (though she does have that Minnesota accent ya know).

I don’t think the nomination was blatant politics at all..it was smart politics. She’s as good for the job as any of the other choices, and why should McCain’s choice be critiqued based on the complexion (gender and race) of this particular election. If he had asked Condaleeza Rice, would he be playing the race and gender card? Or would it be because he thought she was the best choice overall. His only “safe” choice is “old white guy”?

Maybe her family situation is such that her husband spends tons of time with the kids, maybe he homeschools, maybe she pumps at the State House or whatever. Even though that’s not the “traditional” role a woman plays, who says her very public living testimony to her beliefs about the sanctity of life isn’t God’s way of “turning up the heat” on this issue?

It’s not fair to judge her decisions from this highly speculative and media-influenced distance. Just because “we” wouldn’t make that choice, couldn’t ever dream of handling that job, or even be qualified to be asked, doesn’t mean that there’s not a woman out there that CAN do it. My $.02

I agree with what Lisa said, it is hard to imagine having such an intensive job like VP while parenting five children.
However… I am still thrilled with this choice. She is competent, she is pro-life AND pro-woman. She is the anti-Hillary!!

I think McCain just won his election.

I’m fairly sure she goes to a non-denominational Bible Church. So, not Catholic, but her willingness to put her money where her mouth is and have that Downs baby is so inspiring … no calling this strong lady a hypocrite!

Marilyn, that’s what we’ve been wondering about too. I wish we could find some definite info — but Catholic or not, she sure is a great example for women everywhere.
