Mom’s Reading and Viewing List

Icarus Hunt — read for 15-yo — except for one little scene involving kissing, okay for 13 and up.
Hunger Games trilogy — not for handing off to a child to read — needs much discussion, also in light of faith. Areas of concern: violence, manipulation, big government, etc.
Dragon Tattoo trilogy — definitely not for the young. I would say, not even for adults. Fell to reading it after brother left it at my parents’ house. And then I had to found out how it all ended. UGH.
Farewell My Subaru — bleh. Funny descriptions of the author’s journey to completely living off the grid. Not really applicable to a family of 7. We’re already doing a lot of the things he talks about: buying local, growing our own, avoiding toxins, etc. I don’t agree with his conclusion that the Democrats are who one should vote for because they’re more friendly to these save-the-earth principles. Riiiight. They may be for saving the earth, but not for saving the inhabitants. :/ Worthless book. Get a good gardening/homesteading book instead or read/watch Back to Eden. Read The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Animal Vegetable Miracle, etc. and then read the Distributist Review 🙂
Great Expectations — wonderful, wonderful book!!! Dark as usual for Dickens, but so worth the read. Excellent lessons for the young on character building, long-term thinking, what wealth really is, etc.

Wow, I haven’t updated this list in a while. Trying again….

Recent read: Jane Eyre
Recent movies: all the Jane Eyres from the most recent through 1996. None satisfied. Daughter agrees that all the Janes weren’t strong enough — as strong as she was in the BOOK. :/

November-December 2010
Reread the Harry Potter books which we first read in 2001, before I banned HP from the house after reading Book 4. Proceeded to read the rest of the series and I am now, happily, a convert. So much Christian thought in those books! Who woulda thunk? Loving the discussions we have now.
