The video doesn’t really show that much, but do read the letter — something she said really stood out for me:

What I wish I’d been able to say to her is that the major reason I consider her a hero is the way she stands in stark contrast to the false compassion of our day, in which otherwise good people believe love means trying to eliminate suffering by doling out death like it’s the ultimate gift.

Amen, Rebekah.

Palin Slams Obama’s Pro-Abortion-on-Demand Record

Excerpt:

I believe the truest measure of any society is how it treats those who are least able to defend and speak for themselves. And who is more vulnerable, or more innocent, than a child?

Yes, every innocent life matters. Everyone belongs in the circle of protection. Every child has something to contribute to the world, if we give them that chance. There are the world’s standards of perfection … and then there are God’s, and these are the final measure. Every child is beautiful before God, and dear to Him for their own sake.

- Sarah Palin

But the moment that got us off our seats and ROTFL was when Piper licked her hand to smooth little Trig’s hair. That was just PRECIOUS. And so normal. LOL.

This doesn’t change my vote even if it were true. My #1 issue is abortion, and we already know Sarah Palin is solid on this position. While I would love a candidate who is also against artificial contraception, I realize that this may only happen when we have a REAL PRACTICING CATHOLIC on the platform. McCain is not 100% perfect either given his stance on embryonic stem cell research. But I’d rather have these two in office than pro-abortion people. I’m also anti-war, but we are not morally obligated to withdraw support from a candidate on this issue, it’s just something I feel strongly about personally. That doesn’t mean it’s unimportant… just that I’ll take what I can get for now.

Besides the point that we really shouldn’t be talking about matters that are NOT our business to know, I gotta ask the question:

Don’t you think it would have been easier for Sarah Palin to refuse to run with McCain than to allow her name, her daughter’s name, their family’s name, dragged through the mud in all the scrutiny and criticism and condemnation that were bound to follow the announcement? If Sarah Palin was at peace with that, and McCain was at peace with that, then we really ought to leave it alone. They saw the wisdom in their decision, and I gotta trust that they are prayerful enough people that discernment led them to the right thing.

However, I still think that this situation bears watching. I’m eager to see what our Lord has in store for us. These are exciting days. We are actually talking about things that matter. How should we be raising our kids? What should we be talking with them about? What do we allow in our homes? How well should we get to know their friends? What does being “present to our children” mean? If WE make mistakes, how should we deal with it? If THEY make mistakes, how should we deal with it? What should we teach them about dealing with mistakes?

God brings about good in everything that happens to us — good or bad. Do we trust enough to know that God will bring about good in any and every situation that comes? For a practicing Catholic, I think the only answer to that last question is “Absolutely.”

I think that Sarah Palin (and her family, and the challenges they are facing right now) are right in front of our eyes these days for a reason. We need to confront things in our lives as families and as a country that perhaps we have not been willing to confront before. It is time to face the reality of just how far down our society has fallen, and take steps to get ourselves back up. It is also time to look into our own families and see what is working right, what is being blessed by God, where the graces are. Because the graces are many, and we cannot let people convince us otherwise. Yesterday, I saw a commentator hatefully call the Palin’s family a “dysfunctional” one. I think it’s sad when we no longer can distinguish between what’s dysfunctional and what’s not, when we can no longer see a family for what it is: bound together, going through suffering and challenges to grow both in holiness and grace, and despite all the challenges, striving to do what IS right rather than just what will make them look good.

Where I’m coming from:

I told you so: Bennett clashes with Blitzer about “abstinence”

Doesn’t it give you the goosebumps that what’s happening now with Palin’s family is a very direct response to Obama’s words about “mistakes”? Am I the only one who thinks it’s not coincidental? I rather believe it’s providential.

It’s already begun. If you’re still wondering whether Palin should get your vote or not, please read this post from Elizabeth.

An excerpt:

We stand here at a precipice. We can elect a president who believes that babies who don’t die in the course of abortion should be left to die alone on a dirty shelf in a hospital. Or we can elect a solidly pro-life team of candidates. The truth is, Christian women can make or break this election and the appointment of the next justices to the Supreme Court. It greatly disturbs me to read the buzz out there. We need to come to our senses. Christian women who are threatening to stay at home instead of voting for a woman who has a baby and growing family are really missing a valuable point. And it’s a point we miss again and again on large and small scales.

And this from Erin:

Gov. Palin is the only person who knows whether she can fulfill her role as mother while also serving as this country’s vice-president. But I don’t think we can say that being a mother automatically disqualifies a person from such service. The powerful witness to the value of innocent human life made present by her children, especially baby Trig, is hard to ignore in this culture that values slick notions of perfection and hides away or aborts or euthanizes those we deem less than perfect. And the angry feminism that pits mothers against their children might benefit from seeing an example of how it is possible to take an active role in the world without neglecting the most important role of all, that of motherhood.

Gov. Palin is a Christian, pro-life, a mother and one tough gal (just google her experience in fighting corruption and being the voice of her people)… I’m sure she’s not perfect, but looking at her, I can’t help but nod in agreement with others who are reminded of the Proverbs 31 woman or the Sirach 26 woman. She does make us look like slackers, doesn’t she , and having her as VP would send out a powerful message to all our young women out there. I certainly wouldn’t mind holding her up in front of my daughter as someone she might want to emulate. And I daresay even Mama Mary would approve.
